River Side

If you're measured only by how you overcome,
Adversity, this swift river, will be my undoing.

The frigid water screams protest as my sun-warmed
Skin breaks the surface.

Foothills, staggered like giant layer cake
Glare disapproval at my sad plea for attention.

The rocks grin sardonically, hoping for a
Break in the monotony of being inanimate-

My timing is spot on; their show begins.

Wading, circumspect, casting furtive glances
This way, that way, and back.

When you die, weave the sunlight through your demise.

Submerged reeds, like tentacles, grasp and coil
Hungrily about my ankles.

The overhanging braches cackle gleefully. Absent-
Minded ever, I forget to indulge my sorrow;

Latent self-pity will greet the raging torrents with me.
Replete with sin, I plunge deep down.

Icy waters will cleanse my body and expurgate my soul.

One lonely sunflower grieves
My departure; it cries but a single tear that
Splashes across my sleeping brow.

The morning dew!
How sweet it smells to the waking dreamer.
